A pretty scathing review of the McChrystal plan from the American Conservative. Begs one to ask if anyone has actually looked at this in much depth, because as wonderful as it sounds on its face, when you look at the nuts and bolts, there are a few pieces missing with this kit... some assembly required.
absolutely! there is no point in escalating in afghanistan because then we have to go into pakistan, and when we go into pakistan we will have even more enemies to deal with and have to put more soldiers at risk.
Ovcatto, it appears as if you are more desirous of bashing an out-of-office administration rather than opinions on why NOW it's getting more attention...which was your actual question.
Ah, no, I've been on this board since the summer and I never saw a single thread about Afghanistan until folks saw it as a way to bash on Obama, not a one! Suddenly in the course of three days there have been as many threads on Afghanistan, Obama and McChrystal and not one of the thread authors could discuss with any degree of specificity what it was that McChrystal is reported to have stated. That tells me all that I need to know about the BS concerns of the posters that I refer to.
The only 2 points I was wanting to make were these...
Quote:
I don't recall any huge outcry from the dems (or any republicans either) demanding more troops.
Of, course you don't because that is what Obama had been saying since 2004!
Quote:
The other point was this...more troops have been requested by a general who says he can foresee losing there unless things are done differently and with more personnel. In the meantime, our CIC dithers on the issue, neither denying nor approving it...as the clock ticks. The situation continues to deteriorate and more of our people die.
So you are another one who hasn't read what McChrystal is reported to have written.
Quote:
Both parties have played politics with the Afghan situation and both parties will continue to do so.
That's the last refuge of the disingenuous and the uninformed.
Afghanistan is going drag us down just like they dragged down UK and the Soveit Union. We need to learn nations history before we go to war with them You think we had learn this lesson from Vietnam. Afghanistan's history is war

And to add insult to injury, even Vietnam could field 1 million men at arms, had a functioning police force and a strong (albeit corrupt as hell) central government. Iraq, even with its Army disbanded possessed at least three highly trained and motivated militias from which to form a national defense force. What does Afghanistan have?

Yeah, and we are trying to kill the very people who can establish at least some semblance of order in their lives. But we would rather turn them over to ruthless warlords. Can we stop meddling in the lives and countries of other people, please? We just cause endless suffering when we do so.
Help me out here, prior to, during and up until about a month ago most folks, especially the Republican Party and conservatives in general couldn't careless about Afghanistan. No one cared with the key Special Forces units were withdrawn to search of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and no one seem to care when in 2006 NATO commanders begged for a mere 2,500 troops. But now, suddenly, Afghanistan is a big deal. What gives?
It all comes down to Obama and his campaign promises. Hope and Change!
