This all started in the 1960's both parties are to blame, when the government started spending the Social Security money instead of saving it. Each party has just kicked the can down the road to keep the masses happy. Now we are running out of road (other countries not funding our debt). It was bound to happen sooner or later. It would help if Obama would stand on issue's instead of polls but that's what happens when professors step out into the real world.
There are a lot of issues regarding America's state of economy right now but, when talking about Social Security problems, those started in 1935 when FDR signed the Social Security Act. Had he been more than just a politician who sought only to survive, he would have known that such a system required a sound investment return as well as a continued growth in America's working population. We know that fiscal irresponsibility continues to plague the Democratic Party even today. In recent years, even when it became evident that American society was aging rapidly and jobs were being lost, the Democrats fought vehemently any solutions that had any chance of boosting the minuscule investment returns of SS. On top of that, as you said, the Feds (both Dems and Repubs) began to rob from SS for other purposes.
Charles Ponzi went to jail for his fraudulent investment scheme but FDR was able to kick his can down the road for following Administrations worry about it. That fraudulent can is now about kicked flat yet Obama now wants to kick another huge can of health care debt down the road to future younger American generations who are already saddled paying for a disappearing SS system. It is probably no secret to Obama, and possibly not even FDR, when all the money runs out and the debt comes due, the government owns everything.
