Don't you think that would fuel the growing contempt the military has for him?
If indeed the President is not communicating with him well, perhaps he felt it was the only way to get his message to Obama. Personally, I don't think it was very tactful, and it certainly wont win him any favor with the White House.
No, Generals aren't the Commander and Cheif. Their job is to carry out the strategy picked by our elected Military leader.
Now, if they are asked their opinion by the President, or by Congress, then they are free to express that.
Many of the Generals under Kennedy thought he was gutless for not invading Cuba at the start of the Cuban missle crisis. However, they kept their mouths shut about it to the press. Yeah, there were leaks, but nothing like McChrystal is doing now.
What's wrong with a general stating the obvious ? Is he considered a "non patriot ?" a "wuss ?" Should Military people be pro war all the time ? Is it bad for the image to admit that things are not going well, and are not likely to get better, despite new strategies? Is it like bad sex, where you just try a new position, and still "can't get no satisfaction ?"
Yet he's still far superior to his predecessor, whose mess will take years to clean up.
When it comes to the military,...Obama wouldn't make a wart on ANY predecessor's derriere,...with the noted exception of Jimmah Cartah....
Obama is the antithesis of Teddy Roosevelt,..i.e.,...Obama would walk softly and carry NO STICK,...just a teleprompter and a white flag.
