Well that was 23 years ago and there has been a lot of PC crap installed since that time.

Oh my god...lol. Seriously? Wow, you need to just relax. I can't even believe you're offended by winter recess. Give it up already, who cares? Like I said, christmas is still there, it hasn't gone anywhere. Oh my god, I get it now. It's because of overly sensitive people such as yourself that there's even any type of discussion about this, it's such a non-issue. My parents are just around your age & I must say, they've gotten more mellow w/age. I think they'd have a seriously good chuckle if I ever mentioned to them some of the things I hear on this forum.

My Grandmother is a SUPER devout Catholic, and I have never once heard her talk about any "War on Christmas" nonsense.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to find out that some communities start taking Diwali as an official holiday instead of an excused absence. When I did a Google search, I did see that some other countries with have started closing schools for Diwali. Where I work it is not a holiday for everyone yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it became one.
When I Googled on the the Jewish holidays, I saw that there were schools around the country that were closing for the holidays. I assume those are in districts with large Jewish populations.
What I'm arguing is that school districts need to be responsive to the realities of the communities that they serve. While I don't want religious celebrations in the public schools, I see no reason why the schools can't make reasonable accommodations for the religious practices of the communities they serve. As I stated previously, this may be tougher when the students represent a small minority of the community, but I think accommodations can and should be made.

What was wrong with Christmas Break like it was for the whole 20 years I went to school and the 28 that I taught? The PC cadre got hold of it and they just had to see that kind of thing as nasty because it might hurt the feelings of Muslims, Jews, or atheists. All those years it worked and then PC got here.

So there will be no religous themes or symbols at all, probably becasue they wanted to avoid a religious battle. But noooooooooo ....
Why can't Christians just let people alone?
|
+ 1000 I couldn't agree more, this post is unfounded and paranoid. I just galls me that Christians think they are under some kind of attack and that some sinister agency("they") is trying to undermine their religion when historically, that is exactly what they did to every other religion. After Constantine had a vision of Christ, he converted. After his conversion to Christianity, all other faiths were first maligned, and then systematically stamped out, their ardent followers put to death. I truly believe that this would happen today if allowed. Why is the concept of a separation between church and state so hard to comprehend. It is not fair to have only one faith represented so now, no faiths are being represented. This is NOT a Communist country, no one is going to come in the middle of the night and arrest anyone for celebrating Christmas. Celebrate at home and in church, not on gov't property. I am grateful to live in a country where I CAN celebrate any faith that I choose, you should be too.

I don't have a problem with Christmas music per se. But while some of you might listen to a few hours of it nearer to Christmas, or while out shopping, it's on 8 hours a day at work (actually, it's on 24 hours a day, but I'm only there for, well, actually 8 and a half hours minimum.) five days a week from before Halloween on.

A tree does not have to mean the same thing to everyone.
