I don't think the classical British political conservatism of the early 20th century (which Churchill was talking about) bears much similarity to the "liberal" and "conservative" factions of American politics today.
The first election I was eligible to vote in was in 1988. I was 21 years old, a junior history major in college ... at a massively hippie dippie uber uber uber liberal small college. I voted for George HW Bush. Then, when I was in my final year as a graduate student at a large public university in the spring of 1992, finishing my masters degree, Jerry Brown came to campus ... I was done. I changed sides. Even though Jerry Brown lost the primary, I moved to Chicago that summer and voted for Bill Clinton and I've voted Democratic ever since ... I'm 42 now ... SO PUT THAT IN YER CIGAR AND SMOKE IT WINNIE!

Sounds like you entered college a conservative and was fully indoctrinated to becoming an ultra left wing liberal. Good job sponge.
Always interesting to note that Churchill himself was a conservative at 20 and a liberal at 40. Also, that he didn't actually originate the quote. It was first used by a French guy who was essentially complaining that some generations weren't willing to get out in the streets and shed some blood during the Revolution of 1848.
I was "Alex P. Keaton" in high school during the 70's. Ten years later they made a TV show modeled after me. They called it Family Ties. I should collect royalties.
When I became politically aware, there were no conservatives or liberals. 1959. There were only Rich Republicans and Southern Democrats. Everything was conservative. Liberal hadn't been invented yet. I was conservative and joined the military in 1960. Got out in 1970 after 4 tours in Vietnam and became a liberal for quite some time. I considered it therapy. Fell in love and settled down in my mid 30s. Had kids, a home, a career, and a dog. Somewhere in that process I became a moderate conservative. My vote usually goes to the candidate who I feel will do the least amount of damage.
