True. The nurses are the backbone of the healthcare system, yet underpaid and under-appreciated.

Sounds like there was a coverage snafu for the patient and an incorrect diagnosis submitted. Depending on the type and severity of the infection, hospitalization and IV anti-biotics may not have been required at all. Further, after initial hospitalization, home health care can deliver many medicines IV at home.

Cost containment. Isn't that what everybody wants? We try to keep people out of the hospital as much as possible, as an admission is very expensive and many times is not necessary. Monitoring is the main advantage, as most drugs can be given through home health care much more cheaply.

What insurer wants to pay those fees ?

Why is that single tablet costing $10 to the patient ? Is it because they know that whatever price they put the insurance will come through with something ?

This is just an example. There are plenty of outrageous fees tacked onto hospital bills.

I do believe the entire healthcare industry needs an overhaul. It's a broken system where more money is never enough. It needs to be dissected and each piece looked at.
So they charged you $10 for a tylenol. How much did they charge you for the utilites? The nurse who cared for you? The janitor? You realize that they have to recoup their costs somewhere. The flat-rate fee can't begin to cover the total costs associated with running a hospital. They aggregate those costs and pass them on. A $10 tylenol is more than just the tylenol!

Right and how is subsized insurance called reform ?
The prices will only continue to rise and the subsidy will deepen.
Then we'll have a different type of healthcare crisis on our hands.

This link sheds a little more light on the situation.
Bayonne Hospital Center files federal suit against Horizon Blue of N.J. - NJBIZ.com My guess is that the couriers were attempting to advise hospitalized patients that they were receiving services in an out of network facility to cover their behinds. This should not be construed as an attempt to coerce patients to abandon treatment.

Yeah, until that poor patient goes bankrupt over the treatment and then her resulting poor credit report makes it hard for her to rent/get a home or have a decent job. Is the nurse or better yet the hospital going to take care of that problem for her afterwards?

But granted, that's still a lot better than death and I'm glad she was able to stay in the hospital.

You looney liberals cry about the high cost of care. Here an insurance company instructs its patients that it was not going to pay the prices charged by this hospital because they were way too high; it told them they would have to transfer to a hospital in their network which was cheaper.

Obama tells you he can cut the fraud and waste from healthcare and make it all free for you and you sit in a circle and sing Kumbaya. Blue Cross takes a stance against a hospital they believe is engaging in fraudulent practice and you label them "crooks and liars." If I was their attorney I would slap you with a suit for spreading misinformation.

Oh, BC sued them for fraud.
