a letter from the Yale academic dean, and dean of students:

Quote:
"On the evening of Friday, September 11th, following the Community
Dinner, there was a food-eating contest in the Common Room. The
contest was between teams of students eating watermelons. The contest
was a painful reminder of past images and painful stereotypes
involving watermelons and African Americans that continue to be used
today, and it should not have happened. To the extent that it happened
at all is a shared responsibility which we all deeply regret and for
which we all deeply apologize."

Unless I'm missing something by reading this, these people are freakin' idiots. They are making the watermelon correlation which, IMO, is the racist part of the whole thing. I agree with your header..."Sometimes a watermelon is just a watermelon." Am I missing something, or is that it?

I wish someone at Yale would clue me in on "the painful reminder of past images and painful stereotypes involving watermelons and African Americans," as if it's a secret or completely untrue that watermelon is a common food in the African American community.

As the OP asked, should we apoligize for eating chicken too? I have vivid memories of my high school cafeteria being several decibals quieter on fried chicken day. That's not racist. That's a fact. So why the apology over watermelons? Because liberalism is a mental disorder, that's why. There is no other way to quantify the stupidity.

How lame. Watermelons are a perfect "eating contest" food because of it's texture, high water content, colorful juice, and small seeds that need to be worked around. Nobody is likely to choke in the process.

OK, I just pulled all that out of the air but it makes a good arguement don't you think?

I think it's time we banned watermelons! They're obviously nothing but a silent slap in the face to African Americans everywhere.

I Don't get the racist connection there. could just as easily be related to pregnant women, as in......"That's quite a watermelon you swallowed there, sister."

You are absolutely right. I'm amazed that people don't see them for who they really are. This is along the lines of Barbara Boxer talking to the Black Chamber of Commerce CEO. She was like, "What? Did I say something wrong?" These dip$h*ts actually formulated the thought, sat, wrote and sent it and STILL didn't figure out (during the entire time it took them to do this) that they are dumb.

Finally, and at long last, I finally have to agree with 100% of your whole post. Do it again, as I like to laugh at things like that one.
