Immigration, amnesty, borders--are they part of our economic distress?
Topic is economics, I think.
Doesn't "Supply and Demand" fall under economics.... you know, Adam Smith and "The Wealth of Nations".... all that jazz...
Does a oversupply of people and an inflation of the US workforce by low-wage earning illegal aliens causes the demand for US workers to go down?
Doesn't lowering the demand on US workers cause wages to go down?
Let's say there are 10 people (5 US workers and 5 illegal aliens) and 5 jobs. The 5 companies can offer to pay workers less because the company knows that if workers #1 doesn't take the job for that low wage, they can get an illegal alien to do it (worker #2).
Now let's say there are 5 people and 10 jobs. Companies will be forced to offer HIGHER wages to attract the workers! The supply of workers has been reduced by removing the 5 illegal aliens therefore causing companies to pay more and offer benefits to attract workers.
Let's face it... we have more than enough people to fill ALL the jobs illegals do. That is why the large corporate conglomerates WANT illegal immigration and open borders.... so they can pay workers as little as they want or hire an illegal if the US worker will not take the super-low wage.
Economics in action!! Less illegals, better paying jobs for US workers. How do you think the middle-class appeared in the first place in the 1940's? The companies did not have a choice of hiring illegals and had to pay US workers well to attract the workers....
As long as we have an "Artificial increase of the US workforce" by the presence of illegal aliens, wages will stay down and the middle class will continue to suffer.
I always appreciate fully formed responses, and not short-hand. Thanks for this response, in context, it makes good sense.

Yes, the middle class is sinking into poverty as the rich get richer.
The Democrats have talked a good talk... but what exactly have they done since they took power in January????
The only thing they have continually pushed for is to open border and allow more illegal aliens to enter the USA and to push for an amnesty so that big corporate conglomerates have an endless supply of cheap labor, which depresses wages of US workers.
The 'Middle Class' is being very 'squeezed' - but this squeeze has worsened under 27 years of the policies of the Conservative 'movement' And this includes all Republican Presidents and also under Bill Clinton- who basically followed a very business friendly philosophy.
The GOP is the far worse of the two parties- and has traditionally supported the big corporations, shareholders and their CEO's. But the Democrats have also been in the pockets of these thieves- to a less degree.
The GOP however after Progressive TR Roosevelt has been the party of big business and anti reform for the worker, disabled and elderly. They in fact have adopted a very laissez Fair Social Darwinist type of environment.
Americans today are being economically shortchanged by high health care costs, loss of job security; loss of pensions and future safety nets, high energy costs, soaring higher educations costs and a never ending war that has sucked billions out of our country.
Americans today of average or below income are responsible for; Health care to a greater degree then ever; Retirement- with most pensions a dream from the past; and lack of job security. Be 40 -60 years old and be laid off- loose your health care, have some kind of pre existing condition, have a mortgage, all I can say is good luck! Be a CEO a wealthy shareholder, or rich- hey you are in luck! The policies of the Republican party have helped perhaps 15% of all Americans- while the rest of us live from month to month in permanent economic anxiety.
And under the FED reserve leadership of Alan Greenspan and now Bernanke- both whom have decided to create an economy based on easy money and debt- many Americans have very little saved for retirement. With huge demographic changes looming, massive debt, and a world wide asset bubble from stocks to a now crashing housing bubble- the times are going to be a changin- as Americans begin to stop consuming and realize actually how little they have for the future.
In what year did the Middle Class have it so good? I remember a Middle Class when I was growing up that was living in 900 square foot homes, got $4.00 haircuts, no spa treatments, no Starbucks, no second car, Airline travel was only for elites, we had the same furniture for most of their lives, and rarely ate out. Yes, those where the good old days for the Middle Class!
