And, usually about 10 minutes after the event, when the media takes over, we get spun and we divide. So goes the dance.
Yep...the fact that my mail arrived late must be Bush's fault as well. Everything is solely Bush's fault...the Spurs lost...has to be Bush's fault. It's just so obvious. And if you believe that, I have some ocean front property in Arizona...very inexpensive.

Alaskagrl, you are right on when you say that it takes a tragic even to forget our disagreements. I was never so proud of Americans as I was after 9-11...so many have such short memories.

France let its borders open too wide and, like many countries in Europe, is now 10% or more Muslim. Just to be straight on this, the hate was particularly justified by the Muslim community as I understand it. The French people probably didn't approve of this influx of new citizens but their response was to mistreat them and deny them jobs and housing. Most of the Arab youth could not find work and so they lashed out. It was attempt to bring a focus to their plight. Not the best tactic, but when you're desperate, you'll do extraordinary things.

That's a whole different thread that would quickly fill up the Library of Congress.

Things are not that simple. To start with, huge numbers of the Muslims are not French citizens. They are illegal. Now many are legal, but France does have an illegal alien problem similar to our problem with the Mexicans. But France turned a blind eye to the illegals because they needed more taxpayers to support their huge social programs and the huge class of French citizens retiring on generous socialist government benefits. Then their economy turned down, and naturally the illegals are the first to suffer. To make matters worse, when the French authorities actually arrest an illegal, they are taken before a court who orders them to leave, but it's an honor system. An illegal in France can actually be ordered by the government to leave, and then the very same judge will give them the name of a government agency that will give them public housing. The illegals never leave. So the fact that Muslims are rioting and burning cars is not the fault of France unless it's due to the government being too easy on these criminals. When someone violates the law it's no ones fault but their own. The Muslims hate the French because they are not being given what they want at a time when French citizens themselves are not doing so well. The immigrants are not being mistreated. In many ways they are being treated very well.

The USA today seems more split on social issues then race-however the race issue is clearly still around.

'Issues' such as Gay rights and civil unions/marriage, stem cell research, abortion, religion and still race have the USA split culturally perhaps more then anytime since before the civil war- and strangely enough this social cultural chasm exactly resembles the same geographic areas as in 1855.

The New England states, north eastern megalopolis, upper Midwest and west coast are the most 'progressive' while the deep south, border states remain mostly staunchly conservative and traditional. Today you can add a few states from the great plains and inter mountain west to the conservative side.

These divisions will remain the same for the foreseeable future; They certainly show a fractured nation on social-'idealogical lines geographically.

Ive said before that it is impossible to satisfy 300 million people, which is our population now. These 300 million are people from different countrires, races, cultures, languages, etc...its impossible to unite even 50% on most issues. This is the result of our "diversity". A group of judges hands down a ruling affecting the lives of millions, ie Supreme Court, etc.

We need less Federal Govt power, and more states rights. If California wants to say yes to illegal aliens, higher taxes, gay marriage, more social progams, great. But if NC says no to it, then thats great too.

We will continue to be more and more divided. I actually think it is very possible to start seeing similar violence here in the streets of America like in France in 2005 when they had the riots.

Carolinanative,

You are so right. I support stronger state's rights and less federal government intrusion.
