Insurers dropping Chinese drywall policies - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091015/ap_on_re_us/us_chinese_drywall - broken link)
James and Maria Ivory's dreams of a relaxing retirement on Florida's Gulf Coast were put on hold when they discovered their new home had been built with Chinese drywall that emits sulfuric fumes and corrodes pipes. It got worse when they asked their insurer for help — and not only was their claim denied, but they've been told their entire policy won't be renewed.
This is where our federal government needs to step in. There needs to be a national recall and we need to sue the Chinese government if they won't reimburse for the damage their crappy, poisonous materials have caused. What a nightmare.
Can't blame the insurance company unless it's specifically spelled out in the policy. There's a good analogy with car in that article, if there is something defective on your car you don't expect the insurance to cover it... You expect the car manufacturer to fix it. Taking that a step further suppose the defective part has the potential to cause a fire that would be covered under a policy. I wouldn't expect an insurance company to write policies where they know they are going to lose money.
The people in these situations are in a very unfortunate situation and ultimately the responsibility is the manufacturer of the product. Going to be intersting to see if they are held accountable but I did read one article where they have already not shown up for one lawsuit in NO.
