AP Newsbreak: New medical marijuana policy issued...
Finally a step in the RIGHT direction.
AP Newsbreak: New medical marijuana policy issued
Quote:
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer Devlin Barrett, Associated Press Writer – 6 mins ago
WASHINGTON – The Obama administration will not seek to arrest medical marijuana users and suppliers as long as they conform to state laws, under new policy guidelines to be sent to federal prosecutors Monday.
Two Justice Department officials described the new policy to The Associated Press, saying prosecutors will be told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state laws.
The new policy is a significant departure from the Bush administration, which insisted it would continue to enforce federal anti-pot laws regardless of state codes.
Fourteen states allow some use of marijuana for medical purposes: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

Why has policy been dictated by pundits?
15 yrs after the people voted and patients with prescriptions will be ignored their medicine.

Glad to hear this. It was a ridiculous policy for the Feds to prosecute those in compliance with state law.

I don't care if people smoke pot. I actually think it should be legal. However, there are no randomized, blinded, prospective studies showing the "medical" benefit of marijuana. If people with cancer want to get high, let them do so, however, promoting the "medical" uses of marijuana is like people discussing "global warming" in an effort to promote alternative energy use. It is a good idea, but academically disingenuous.

No.
Drugs have been a major money maker in this country. How many family fortunes were made on alcohol when it was illegal? Well, the same thing happened/is happening with other drugs.
Remember, under the Sandanistas, when the CIA was caught bringing drugs into the US for illegal sales?
Remember, not too very long ago, a plane flying corpses of servicmen into the US crashed, the sight was photographed, a casket had opened revealing bags of drugs and no body?
Afghanistan has been the opiate capital of the world since we took over the country.
Every country that has adopted the 'US drug policy' has dropped it and has some sort of tiered program with penalties and treatment on a tiered system based on the medical dangers that the drug presents.
Our drug policy uses no science nor logic. It is built only to make money for powerful people. Remember, one of the first things 'W' wished to do when he took office was to stop the inspections of trucks going back and forth over the Mexican border.
I am even suspicious of overseas charitable works by ex-politicos, especially those dealing with medicine, as it would be an excellent way to launder drug money as well as move them - at least to my untrained mind.
Marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol. I would legalize it or ban alcohol - to be consistent.
When something seems illogical and is done by smart people there is usually a reason for it.

DING DING DING DING We have a winner!!!!!!!!
How anyone can justify alcohol being legal while pot isn't is beyond me. either outlaw both or legalize both.
Even more indefensible is the fact that most drug offenders, even nickel and dime types get more prison time, usually MUCH more prison time than violent offenders.
Seems to me that the drug war is just a tool for the government to keep the poor, especially poor minorities, under their thumb. After all, one drug arrest will basically ruin your life. No one will hire a felon and you no longer qualify for any tuition assistance so college is out.

Amazing isn't it? Almost like the so called war against Communism by funding the Contras was just a front to keep cocaine prices high.

Afghanistan was already the Opium capital of the world, accounting for 90% of Heroin production long before the US invaded. Mujaheddin sustained themselves in the 80s and early 90s by growing and selling Opium. The Taliban later banned growing the plant, per request of the Clinton administration, which pissed off a certain Osama Bin Laden.. Guess I do not need to spell out the ending of that story?
In any case, Southeast Asia is also a large producer of opium/heroin.
