Having lots of "poor Christian Republicans" in my family I'd list the reasons as follows

1. They care more about gay marriage and abortion than all other issues by far. Given most Demcrats in power not supporting gay marriage and both Bush's SC nominees saying they wouldn't overturn R vs W this seems strange.

2. Many Evangelical Christians believe the Bible says that there must be an Israeli state for Jesus to return and be crowned "King of the Jews", therefore they have a hard core, no compromise stance on the USA supporting Israel.

3. They don't like the gov't to tell them what to do even if it's in their best interest. They will willingly take 15 years off their life to prove so. I know people who smoke just to prove the gov't can't stop them!

4. Partly due to the Israeli thing (they view the USA military actions as being critical to allowing Jesus to return) they can not stomach criticism of USA actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. They seriously view those wars as a continuation of the Crusades.

5. Since they take a literal view of the Bible - and a 6,000 yr old Earth - the Democrats talk of long term Climate Change, etc is seen as being anti-Christian.

Maybe because they plan on getting out of poverty.

I would guess some feel they do not want any hand outs. My brother is a hard working, but poor redneck kind of guy. He has no health insurance, yet he does not want the goverment to give to him for free. When he gets laid off each winter he takes his unemployment because he says he has paid into it. He would be able to get foods stamps during the winter but he says he would rather live on pinto beans and eggs than be on welfare. In his mind D's are lazy and the R's work and don't want hand out from the goverment.

The present day Southern Republicans are in a lot of cases the pre- 1960's Dixiecrats of the Democratic Party in the South. After the Civil Rights Act of 1964 the Democratic Party basically lost the South. The only two Democrats that have had much success in the South since that time as presidential candidates are Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter both one-time Southern governments.

If you are familiar with the "Southern Strategy" it pretty much explains this. The Republican Party used race and civil rights are a wedge issue to get the support of Southern White voters.

Honestly? If you got rid of abortion, it would go a long ways toward me voting democrat. I believe in small government, lower taxes, and all that...but there have been fairly conservative dems that I would never consider voting for simply because they support abortion.

I consider 4000 dead babies a day to be much worse than any other issue.

Maybe you should read the bible before so that you can get a handle on how Christians (poor or rich) feel about money and work. The GOP advocates mostly a hard-work versus a "hand-out" mind-set that socialism advocates. From the money you make by working hard, you help the poor get on their feet to "work" also. Help the helpless not the clueless or lazy.......

Proverbs:
3:9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;

14:23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.

21:5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.

16:3-5 Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. The LORD works out everything for his own ends— even the wicked for a day of disaster. The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

18:9 One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys.

27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.

Genesis 2:15
The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Proverbs 21:25
The sluggard's craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work.

Proverbs 22:26-27, 29
Do not be a man who strikes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.... Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.

Proverbs 22:9
A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.

Yes but none of that is guaranteed so they can work hard and still be dirt poor
