What in the world has happened to this country? Have we finally lost our souls as well as our minds? It is one thing to be against a different political party but to be so bereft of common sense or common decency that you make an issue of things that use to be considered as commonly held values such as volunteering, encouraging children to stay in school, cheering on your country in international events such as the Olympics, etc. etc. is simply tearing this country apart. If you can not defeat the other political party without destroying your country then what, may I ask, have you gained? I am so sad that my grandchildren must live in this destructive atmosphere. This is a beautiful post. As a Boy Scout we did extensive volunteer service as well as promoted volunteerism to the extent of our limited abilities. No one ever accused us of being communists. The impoverished people thanked us for food and others for our service in various ways.
Beck truly represents everything destroying the fabric of our country by pitting one against another for absurd concepts like this.

If you've read through the thread, you would have seen that a big part of the problem is the utter hypocrisy of those who volunteer the least telling others to do so.
It would have been better if they had used other, more genuine spokespersons and other means of conveying an obviously worthy message.

What I see as I read through the thread is the utter hypocrisy of people who cheered President Bush 41 for his "Thousand Points of Light", cheered Nancy Reagan for her "Just Say No", cheered both Barbara and Laura Bush for their literacy campaigns, cheered President Bush 43 for his "compassionate conservativism", etc. etc. etc. now jeering President Obama for encouraging volunteerism and urging the entertainment industry to use their considerable clout to encourage a new generation to volunteer.
You don't like the spokespeople and say they are not genuine. Since you do not know these people personally and certainly do not know what they do or do not do in their personal lives to help others then what you really mean is that you do not like their politics and you are upset by the idea that people might actually learn that liberals do good things and do help others. Since you want the message to be "Conservatives good, liberals bad" I can see why you are upset that a different message is being heard. Tough.

No... YOU'RE making it political, as evidenced in your above post.
I was referring to this study:
"Volunteering is usually associated with wealthy people and college students. However, a new survey has put out results that show that white women and those living in the Midwest volunteer the most. Cities on the coasts were said to have the lowest volunteer rates."

But informed, you have no idea how often or if at all these celebrities volunteer, just like I don't so how can you make such an assumption?
