Barack Obama has said that the U.S. needs to do a better job teaching its youngsters languages other than English.

Obama said "We as a society do a really bad job of teaching foreign language and it’s costing us in the global marketplace.”

If this is true, why are so many elementary schools teaching Spanish today? Shouldn't we be teaching Chinese, Japanese, German, French, or one of the languages of India?

Most Spanish speaking countries are poor countries, have bad economies and only the rich in these countries can get a quality education.

The problem is that most of the time, when you speak to a foreign employee whose second language is English, the heavy accent and lack of idomatic comprehension leads to a very frustrating and non-productive communicative experience. How many folks out there have gone nuts trying to talk to a Customer Service Representative in India or Manila and can barely comprehend their rhetoric?

Outsourcing = stricly done for a short-term reduction in labor cost to boost profits temporarily. The execs/key shareholders take the gains and run before the customers get pissed off with the poor customer service and switch to an alternate in the industry.

And since B. Hussein Obama has zero financial/business acumen, he shouldn't be commenting on any marketplace.

This does not answer the question as to why Spanish is so important for the world stage.

North America is the only place where people think Spanish is so important. There are large German companies in the USA. The Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga is one example. There are other big foreign owned companies in the USA. There are not many large Spanish speaking companies in the USA. There is no nice way to say this but Spanish is used to communicate with the people of lower income. It's not good to know Spanish on a global level for doing business.

I think learning any other second language is beneficial. I myself would like to learn spanish simply because it makes sense w/a larger hispanic population. I'd also like to learn more french & italian.

Learning a second language is worthless for most students.

It would really be nice if our high school graduates were skilled in reading, writing, and speaking our native language before they try to master a second.

Even better, concentrate on making our education competitive with the rest of the world. Obama is so focused upon getting a healthcare bill passed that he is blind to the mediocrity of our education system. There are SO MANY more important educational issue that outweigh that of a second language.

I wonder how many languages Barack speaks? His children? One has to wonder if he leads by example or just speaks BS in apologetic terms.

Pointing out that most americans are not bilingual is hating on america? Is there any time on this forum that some of you don't have something negative to say about the president? Maybe in the pet forum?
