Why does this thread have to break down into a stupid liberal vs. conservative arguement? Don't you people ever get sick of doing that? When not just focus on the issue without turning it into a petty arguement?
I thought we were talking about personal income taxes and personal productivity. "So wait -- on the one hand you acknowledge that people seek to avoid taxation and on the other you believe it has no affect on productivity?"
Taxing productivity is a drag on productivity whether implemented at the individual or aggregate level. How hard would you work if your tax rate were 100%?

I'd get a better advisor. If I were producing x-product or service strictly to get rich I'd have considered the tax effect long before I got invested in it.
CaliforniaBear, I think people protect the rich and policy/legislation that benefit the rich and not themselves because they've been trained to, they just dont think too closely about what they're doing; also for that carrot-stick reason: "I, too, may become rich one day."

Of course you would, because when they can be predicted with a degree of accuracy, taxes are an input against which output is measured -- in other words, taxes affect productivity. It's why businesses move to where taxes are lower, because it increases their productivity.

Either that, or they understand that it's not an either/or between policies that protect the rich or protect themselves. Some policies can benefit both and some can harm both. Tax and economic policy is not a zero-sum pie.
In recent years, the rich have gotten major, huge tax breaks. I think that we need to tax them more.
I am not suggesting that we tax them a HUGE amount. I am mostly just suggesting that we repeal the tax cuts that have been given to them in the past 20 years.
The fact is, the tax cuts given to the rich were NOT done for the best interest of the people, or to help America. They were done in the name of lobbying, kickbacks, bribery, and politicians helping out thier big business buddies.
To some level, people have been brainwashed on this issue. The conservative side of America seems to have been sold on the idea that tax breaks for the wealthy are a great idea. Probably because Neo-cons like Bush and Cheney promoted the idea so strongly.
