I know this posting is inflammatory. The statement I want to make is in relation to all those who are using the terms "Fascist" and "Hitler" in connection with Democrats, or "Lefties" as we are sometimes called here. Sinclair Lewis is much beloved by the Christian Community and by extension the Conservatives in general. To know what he said should at least give us all pause to rethink the namecalling...I'm sure this will upset some ... just wondering what others think about this?
I love "Red" Lewis, but had never thought of him as a Christian, particularly after Elmer Gantry. Im so pleased you brought this up!
The book that quote is from is right on the money, about creeping fascism: It Cant Happen Here (1935).
You can read an illuminating sketch of Lewis and his feelings about organized Christianity in in The Christian Century Reader, accessible at Google Books. When you get there, the chapter title is "Sinclair Lewis' Sunday School Class", by Samuel Harkness.
Looking around for further information on Red and Christendom I came across this very well researched-seeming historical novel. He seems to be carrying on in the same vein.

You know... I think you're confusing Sinclair Lewis with CS Lewis.
I will look into that -- I just saw the graphic with the quote attributed to Sinclair Lewis and wanted to get the thoughts and comments of others. Thanks -- I'll repost when I find more information on this. Don't often post a new thread and was hesitant to do this one...
Red Lewis wrote many books "the Christian community" wouldnt take kindly to, including Babbitt and your quoted book It Cant Happen Here.
My apologies: you are correct, it is C.S. Lewis I was thinking of as the Christian writer...I will try to change my title for this post, as I still think the quote and the book you mention, "It Can't Happen Here" is a valid point of view to consider. Thank you for clarifying -- think I'd like to read this book.
