Age old dilemma. Can consumer choice subsidize higher wages for local jobs? Same as Walmart (Target, Costco, etc.) vs. Mom and Pop store on Main St. USA. Same as buying products manufactured in the US (if you can find any) instead of Taiwan, China, etc...

Enough people have to believe in the concept and learn about the concept of buying local and be WILLING to pay a premium. Not an easy task.

I like the idea.... but have to admit I get the large majority of my food from regular markets and much of it is packaged and probably produced far away. I am "game" for the OP's ideal thought... but it is not practical for me unfortunately.

How does this sound anything like China's Cultural Revolution? At its core, the Cultural Revolution was based in class struggle and anti-intellectualism. In contrast, this entire food debate has been fueled by intellectuals who, rather than being purged for voicing their opinions, are actually garnering a lot of interest and support among government officials (both liberal and conservative). Also, I highly doubt that PurpleLove (or any of these food experts) are advocating for shipping ordinary people off to the countryside as farm labor.
