Some companies are hiring and some companies are laying off and closing. The lay offs exceed the new hires so the unemployment rate continues to climb. Some areas in the U.S. are doing a lot worse than others so they are keeping the unemployment rate up.

Exactly!
Thank you for reminding tropolis that "demand" is not the only variable in this equation!

thats what I did. I don't just look in one area. Anything that pays in the range I'm looking that I see has potential, I'm interested in. If you limit yourself, you won't go anywhere.
but thats what i mean when i say people dont know how to properly conduct a job search.

Your assertion that jobseekers are (1) limiting themselves to one type of job and/or (2) limiting themselves geographically or (3) limiting themselves salary wise may be true of some people, but it is not generally true.
Many jobseekers are applying for anything they are even remotely qualified for, regardless of the field, and regardless of the commute. You obviously don't read the NYT regularly or you would have seen at least a few of the excellent feature stories they have run recently on this very topic.
I challenge you to post the very same assertions you have made here on the W & E forum, and see what the "cat drags in" in response.
I wonder whether you would have any interest in hearing the stories of "real unemployed people."

I believe the government reports what it thinks you need to think... for you.

Up to one-fourth of the 110,000 jobs reported as saved by federal stimulus money in California probably never were in danger, a Bee review has found.

I am most certainly NOT "unemployed."
As for my age -- none of your business!
Now, perhaps you might go back and answer the unanswered question I posed to you!
