I was brought up never to run FROM anything. If I were to leave, I would be running TO something I wanted more than what I have here.

There are several cities in Mexico that have more United States citizens in them than Mexicans. Their growth has been achieved because of the fact that dollars spend like ten when you go south of the border.

In San Miguel de Allende, for instance, there are about 15,000 semipermanent residents who are actors and artists who only work sporadically in L.A. and spend their down time in Mexico waiting for the next offer to come in. The growth in population has killed the cheap living, however, due to the rise in local prices due to high demand. There was a time fifteen or twenty years ago when you could get a large villa with a live-in cook and maid for under a thousand dollars a month. Once it gets noticed, it goes to heck.

The coast still has a lot of unspoiled fishing villages. One of them could conceivably be a part of my retirement future.

I will be honest, as ****ed up as people claim our country is, we still got people from across the border and across the pond coming over here in droves. People in the entertainment industry from Europe, their goal is to score big in the states. People from the UK, from Asia, etc.....they come over here all the time. Sometimes it's not always for the best, but we do dictate the climate of the rest of the planet.

It would have to get pretty bad before I'd consider moving abroad. But as long as I'm sitting here in front of the keyboard, let me ask you this: why do you allow a horoscope to dictate your moves? Are you aware that the constellations aren't set patterns, but only observable as such because of our perspective in the Galaxy? I myself have doubts that burning globes of hydrogen have any prescient abilities.

The Hill Country is where I will retire when I finally leave Switzerland! I went to camp down there for 10 years and now my daughters spend their summers down there.

My favorite place in the world

It's not all that great, especially when you factor in consistent 8-10% unemployment (depending on which EU country you're talking about) among native born persons.

Canada would be the only logical choice for me if things went that far south here. I'm a native Michigander so moving to Ontario wouldn't be a big deal. We already are used to dealing with Canadian coins in our change.
So you think you could deal with all those loony toonies?

Wow, just strange.

Before you decide to abandon ship I suggest you visit some of the countries you prefer on an extended basis.

Learning the language before you go is paramount, because unlike in the USA, nobody is going to cater to you in English if that's not their native tongue.
Maybe not cater to, but most people in the world are nice; they'll try.
You will never be absorbed into another culture, and I like being on the periphery; I'm not involved in their politics and I get to enjoy the best of being an outsider.

Lucky for us, English is the language of travel.

Canada, France, Germany, Denmark etc...all seem like cool countries. Not for any political reasons, just to live there and check it out. If I was younger I probably would give it more serious consideration.

I like not being enmeshed in the politics of a country.
My gripe with the US is more cultural and religious, rather than political.
