Are you intending to talk about Copyright laws, or patents? They're different, but in principle the same.

Basically, both Copyright and Patent laws NEED to be in place. Without them, there's no right to intellectual property or inventions. And if there's no financial benefit in pouring millions of dollars into research that leads to an invention, there will be drop in advanced inventions.


To me, the question revolves around how many years Copyrights and Patents ought to be granted.

Music copyright laws have been changed relatively recently, I believe that once a writer exchanges his material to another person, that is in fact copy writing it. Although they can only sue for punitive damages if they have it registered.

From what I have been reading, if something can be digitized, it is almost pointless to copyright/patent it.

If this proves true, makes me wonder what will happen in the future...
