Not surprising at all.

When there are fast food meals cheaper than purchasing healthy groceries parents make that choice.

Also, there's the problem of obese kids, so they must be eating something... even if it's unhealthy food they're eating it.

Any kid in school that is poor can qualify for free breakfast and lunch. They give them sack lunches on Friday to get them through the weekend. In the summer they feed them at the park. "Poor" can be up to 2.5 times the poverty rate. If a kid is hungry it's his parents fault. If his parents don't enroll because they are illegal it is their fault. No child should go hungry. We spend billions on welfare programs to ensure they don't. At what point do we just turn the kids over to uncle Sam?

No child should go hungry, not in this country. There parents failure to plan their lives accordingly, and their parents failure to plan for the costs of raising a child should not result in a hungry child.

That being said.

Feed the children, through the school system. Every child has to go to school by law, and most schools serve food.

We need to stop funneling money to support the innocent children THROUGH the people (parents) responsible for their hungry kids in the first place. That makes no sense.

Start serving dinner for children in the evening and DCFS should open up a claim and review why the kids are going hungry. If the parents have cell phones, cable, air conditioners and the other luxary items commonly perceived as "basics", then they should be subjected to child endangerment law.

If someone knows of such an organization that does, provide it here. My advice is to find people in the community to help. I'm sure there are people you work with or know that need help. Do your part and offer any assistance you can. A lot of people especially the poor are proud and honest folk who don't want hand-outs even though they need help. Get past that and offer them help.

Sometimes a little bit of government intervention is necessary in order for that to happen.

actually Huckle if you recieve food stamp benefits most states don't hand out cash and the rules for purchasing are very rigid.
Gibbs I agree with you but have seen single mothers who were abandonded by their significant other and see children who through no fault of their own aren't fed properly and I am talking about nutricious meals not fast food.
Are we so heartless in this nation to deny somebody who is in need?

At some point you athiest liberals who denounce God as superstition are going to have to let Darwin prevail. Survival of the fittest, remember? Evolution you call it.

No, no. It's Republicans who believe in pure Darwinism with no government intervention; Democrats understand that a humane society helps those who need it.

You can cook your own meals that are far healthier and cheaper than fast food IF you take the time to plan the meals correctly and shop for good buys.

The problem is like most of these issues is that requires too much responsibility that a person is willing to take.
