The national space agency's biggest dreamers and best engineers are still aiming for a return manned mission to the moon by 2020 followed by a pioneering mission to Mars a decade or so later. That's their official goal in theory and one sanctioned by Congress. But the cost estimates are simply crushing, and mounting federal deficits will require the agency to rein in its biggest plans by a galactic scale or two. Look for lots more attention to be lavished on unmanned space science in the next decade.

Gosh having that "trillion" term thrown around so much lately by the present adminstration makes it seem almost affordablle.

Just as soon as World Peace is accomplished.
Not a minute sooner!

It would be better to skip further space exploration.....for TIME travel instead.
Think of all the vacation possibilities in time travel too.....in comparison with a stay at a Mars Hilton?
Beat anything worth going to Mars for.
Far more appealing too, IMO.

If it's going to lead directly to actual colonization, I'm for it. Otherwise, I think it could be put off for a few years.

I say NO to a MARS mission until the national debt is paid off and we have money to throw at such endeavors.

Instead let's pay back all the bailout money to the taxpayers with that.

If we had a few trillion laying around somewhere and no debt then I would support a mission to Mars.

Sounds good. We'll call it a healthcare related exploration and roll it into the healthcare bill. Now the healthcare bill only comes to a mere $1.849 trillion.
