Because we're tired of being a superpower and want to hand the torch off to someone else? Or: why does a compulsive spender have self-destructive tendencies?

Still? Because we had no exit strategy. The struggle there is one that cannot be won with a military force. It will take an economical one. Unless we can come up with something to bring a better standard of living to those people, they will continue to turn to their opium farms and their tolerance of the Taliban. And lets face it - that land is worthless. The only exit strategy that ever existed for that country is just to leave it (after we've kicked their ass - and we have) and to leave them to themselves (and all the anarchy that would come). There isn't a pretty solution to that country AT ALL.

To secure the area for Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline as per the needs of our masters in China maybe?

Wouldn't Russia assist us in that endeavor?

To find Osama Bin Laden, mastermind of 9-11.

No one has redefined it since but I do notice that now we are there guarding the poppy fields and not looking for him anymore.
