In fact, I'm a guy who had more like 25 hrs of classes and worked about 20 hrs a week. I took out loans for my tuition. I got about 10k in scholarships. I worked hard to get where I'm at.
Most kids in the UC system are like me. My family is very typical of the average UC demographic. Suburban Californian with a family making roughly 80-100k a year. One parent college educated. One immigrant parent. Pretty much the average demographic of a UC student. I got a 4.5 in high school. 1220 SATs (out of 1600).
But your false nostalgia and warped political views are such that we shouldn't focus on the future doctors, lawyers, adminstrators, teachers, scientists, etc...
It's actually better for business to have an educated population. Hence why CA, despite all its problems, remains a place of innovation.

I don't think CA can BE much poorer. And the UC system is one of the reasons.
CA may have been a place of innovation, but those innovators are heading for the hills. They're leaving to other states, where they can be free to innovate. It may be good for business to have an educated population, but it's also good for the employee.

That's an interesting take. They are rioting since my generation was given less of a chance to obtain the middle class lifestyle as your generation. Because the past squandered it BS. That my generation has to subsidize your generation.
As someone who started college during Obama's first term (1979), it's not much different. Add to that the fact that my first house had an interest rate of 13%, I'm not sure why you think you have been given less of a chance at the american dream. I went to college, bought a house, and pay my bills.
It's called hard work, smart choices, and living within your means. And, oh yeah, making your own way.
You may subsidize the baby boomer generation, but as someone without children, I subsidized your education. I call that fair.

Students have been protesting increases in fees for the last 20 years at least... We've had Republican governors for most of that time.

if it wasnt for student aid...i doubt i would have the privilege of going to college. i'm unemployed so i have no choice but to go back to school now.
The communist/marxist/socialist got mad in the 60's too when their funds were cut for going to UCofB. At least this time they left the sawed-off shotguns and Molotov cocktails at home, so far.
tuition hikes are fine...until the day comes when college is no longer within the reach of our young.
Still, I cannot understand why colleges need more and more and more. I'm genuinely asking b/c I don't know. Rutgers Univ. in NJ is a part of this phenomenon: tuition hikes for 'need' but yet they borrowed money for a football stadium expansion.
