Fishmonger - this is my story. My husband and I both have full time jobs and he has a part-time job ion the side. We made too much to qualify for government assistance for our daughters' daycare. Therefore we are paying almost $700 a month on daycare and there are about 3 mothers on welfare that get the daycare services for free since they qualify. Thes mothers bring their children at the same time I do and pick them up at the same time I do. The only difference is that they bring them dressed in pajamas and return home as soon as dropping them off. I go to work upon dropping mine off. These mothers work nowhere so I can't understand why they need daycare. What is wrong with a country that offers free daycare to people who spend the day at home until 6:00 pickup time? Its almost like the government is telling me that if I don't work, they will pay for everything.
Another example - when I first got pregnant, I was in college and my husband worked a full time job, while I worked part-time after school. We thought that since I was in college and couldn't work full time that I might qualify for Medicaid to help pay for the medical bills. The agent I went to with the DHR told me that they couldn't help me because we had too much income, but if I quit my job, I could get on Medicaid. What kind of message is this?
The scenario was: 1 guy was afraid to hunt because it was dangerous, so the others who are enduring the danger, must feed him or get their asses kicked for not helping... I will take the beating.. Big boy better not go to sleep, or there will be another BBQ.....
He could always look for roots to go with the meat. Or since he can't hunt, he could double up on the others chores like getting water, cooking, gathering wood for a fire, patching the makeshift hut they live in, washing clothes, watching for boats or planes. There are a varity of things he could do, just because he is not good or refuses to be good at one does not mean he can't do other things to contribute to the survival of the group.
They're trying to train him to get back into the workforce but sometimes the guy just won't budge. Useless except for a good joke now and then or a freestyle poetry rant about how his wife left him for a four-armed gorilla after the Global Warming Nuclear Holocaust modified humanity's accepted concept of beauty and worth.

Horrible message and they need to change that. Graduate all the benefits. I still think we should support the unemployed for various reasons, but they shouldn't cut people off below the poverty line. There shouldn't ever be a situation where you have less for making more.

I'm a mom. Mom's are like Drill Sargents and expect everyone to do their fair share around the house/hut.
Now, when one of mine (dh included) drops the ball and decides 'not to budge' then i use tough love. I decide what is most important to them on that given day, and i take it away from them. Usually they come around to my way of thinking.
Again, I say, if he can't do other chores, he does not get to eat that day. He will come around to my way of thinking, one way or another.
These are some good posts with some excellent ideas. To make the analogy a bit more accurate, one must include the fact that Jabberjangles keeps some of the collect food for himself as payment for his successful efforts at strongarm extortion, after not contributing any of his own, or only a minute amount.
