In the Midwest where I live, it seems that rural counties lean heavily Republican. Unless it's near a major metropolitan area or college town, the areas usually have Republican Representatives, etc.

What are some Democratic leaning rural areas?

The New England area (Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, etc.). The ONLY area of the country where even the rural areas vote Democratic along with the cities...

Im speculating here, but also parts of WV, PA, Ohio, IL, CA, Oregon, Washington, and Iowa. I am not saying that all, or even most, rural areas go blue but some probably do in these places. Sorry if I left anywhere out.

NE Minnesota is hard core Democrat territory. The Iron Range and such...

New Mexico, South Texas, many rural counties in the South (pretty much the entire western half of MS went blue).....

Take a look at this (click on state to go county by county): President Map - Election Results 2008 - The New York Times

I think that if you look at anywhere that is rural but with a heavy union membership. Northern MN and the UP of MI because of the iron ore mining. PA and WV because of the coal mines. The farming areas of CA, FL, SD, ND and others states that use/used migrant workers. Over time many of the workers settle down in the areas that they'd travel thru for work. But they're a different type of Democrat. They share many of the same views on moral issuse as the Repubs. but are very pro-labor. In alot of way they're more like the party of Kennedy and Truman. Than that of Clinton and Obama.
Also many areas or the south where the racial make up is mainly AA are heavily Dem. But for many years AA have felt that their vote didn't matter so their turn out was low. It will be interesting to see if the Dems will be able to muster the same AA voter turnout in 2016 When Obama is no longer able to run.
