I agree with the OP 100%. I can't even do the crossword in the TV guide because I have no idea who the so called celebrities are - wouldn't know one if I tripped over them and could care less.
That said, I think a huge part of the problem is that young people grow up with tv and movies such a big part of their lives they actually look at the celebrities as being the characters they portray.
Kids are no longer grounded in reality and turn into adults that aren't equipped to make important decisions like voting. They simply can't tell the real from the fake, the good from the bad.
I too have never been one to idolize or worship famous people....and the older I get the more I feel that we're really all equal and even though some people have managed a larger measure of human success and fame if you will.....they are in most if not all cases not worthy of worship anymore than anyone else. Those who idolize and worship "famous" people are really only showing their own lack of self worth in my opinion. Let me add one thing here though. In human terms some people have accomplished much in this life and I have no problem with admiring those folks if they have done things you think are great and beneficial....but there is a huge difference between admiring and idolizing and/or worshiping them.
No, I don't care about celebrities beyond what their next film/song/book/etc. is going to be. And the people (like Paris Hilton) who are "famous" for being famous without actually having accomplished anything? I just don't get it.
On the other hand, the rags wouldn't be sitting there at the check-out line if there wasn't money to be made (i.e., if people didn't buy them).
Well -- she made that porn video that she released to the internet. That was something at least.
I don't know. And even more worrying is why people CREATE "celebrities" to be enamored of via reality tv. Anyone can do the lamest, nastiest, stupiest thing and instantly gain a following and be booked on even MORE realitiy tv shows. INSTANT CELEBRITY is a crazy thing and really does highlight the worst of human nature and hold it up as normal, causing all of society to lower it's standards.

Yes, just that I'm just not sure what is so great and beneficial for mankind about acting in a movie, being an heiress, or singing and dancing your butt off in front of people.

Singing and dancing your butt off in a movie (or even giving a good performance acting) can bring a lot of enjoyment to people. It's an escape from reality for a little while. Being a beautiful heiress is a big fat nothing, as far as bringing anything worthwhile to the table.
Here is a great dance scene from "The Seven Little Foys" done by Bob Hope and James Cagney.
