Yet now, nearly six months after a contested presidential election that has riven the country more than at any time since the birth of the Islamic theocracy, a new narrative is arising around the Arab world in which Iran is no longer a political demigod. Beset in recent months by the bloody spectacle of regime enforcers stamping out pro-democracy protests, and by dozens of deaths, torture, and allegations of rape in secret prisons, Iran is losing influence among some of its friends in the region and stiffening opposition among foes.

Bush gave the Iranian regime legitimacy and allowed them to become a regional power. Now that Bush is gone they are losing their influence. Same with Venezuela too.

Yep; no one is paying attention has iran says its going to increase its nuclear program;especialy Obama.Thehe actaully justifies his afganistan policy based on the risk that pakistan has nuclear arms. Certain isn't the world opinion on the risk of a expnading and enboden Iran in the last 11 months. Bascially they have satrted givign this adminsitrtion the finger as well as the international community . They see weakness it is clear.

The OP has no shame. And obviously very little propensity for paying attention to the real world. Iran just spat in the face of the United States and the rest of the world for the umpteenth time, but yet they have no "influence."

Ask the Army and the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan how much "influence" Iran has when one of Iran's munitions makes it to the hands of terrorists and takes out a few of our soldiers.

The OP is simply clueless.

Same can be said for you. Geographically, Iranian arms aren't reaching Afghanis insurgents, the insurgents are on the Eastern side of Afghanistan. The bigger worries are US funded arms reaching the hands of the insurgents.

Arms Sent by U.S. May Be Falling Into Taliban Hands

By C. J. CHIVERS
KABUL — Insurgents in Afghanistan, fighting from some of the poorest and most remote regions on earth, have managed for years to maintain an intensive guerrilla war against materially superior American and Afghan forces.

Arms and ordnance collected from dead insurgents hint at one possible reason: Of 30 rifle magazines recently taken from insurgents’ corpses, at least 17 contained cartridges, or rounds, identical to ammunition the United States had provided to Afghan government forces, according to an examination of ammunition markings by The New York Times and interviews with American officers and arms dealers.

The presence of this ammunition among the dead in the Korangal Valley, an area of often fierce fighting near Afghanistan’s border with Pakistan, strongly suggests that munitions procured by the Pentagon have leaked from Afghan forces for use against American troops.

The scope of that diversion remains unknown, and the 30 magazines represented a single sampling of fewer than 1,000 cartridges. But military officials, arms analysts and dealers say it points to a worrisome possibility: With only spotty American and Afghan controls on the vast inventory of weapons and ammunition sent into Afghanistan during an eight-year conflict, poor discipline and outright corruption among Afghan forces may have helped insurgents stay supplied.

To the OP, Iran is doing just fine with their influence. There's always the Israelis to rally against.

The OP seems to have a strange fascination with Bush and can't seem to move past things. Palin's got Dukie. Bush now has an admirer of his own.

and look at where this came from, one of the most liberal publication out there, only the NY Times and maybe Huffington Post can hold a candle stick to the CS Monitor.

Oh look, another Bush-bashing post from joejitsu.

Funny how he hasn't been President for almost a year, and yet, we are worse off now than we were before. Your act has become quite tiresome.

Just keep this in mind, Iran will never support the Taliban because they're shia and the Taliban are sunni.
