When I was in high school waaaay back in the 60s, I recall my social studies teacher looking down his nose at China and the USSR because they had such a high rate of incarceration.

I suspect very few people commit crimes because they are hungry. If they're hungry they'll apply for food stamps before they'll commit a crime. Crime is a problem of the human heart. That's the source of the problem. It's greed, it's lust, it's envy, it's covetousness, it's hatred. Social programs can't cure those ills. Because society no longer believes in redemption all we have left is incarceration after the fact. The problems are going to get worse, not better.
So that's why areas of affluence have less crime? Because they are "less greeds"? Yet they have more and we see that they WANT more in most cases.

Lack of jobs could lead to drug dealing and theft. High incarceration rates impact inner city males more, thus mothers are raise children and may work several jobs (higher cost of living in the cities...yet stagnation in wages). Thus, children suffer and may seek out gangs. Lack of funding in schools in these regions don't offer many alternatives.

It's not about being intrinsically evil or good...it is about these social factors.

Well, here's the thing. The lack of economic opportunity still exists, yet the voting constituency and those in power are taking a more conservative approach to the problem. Some of the ideas are good (like federal funding for church based community programs). Some, not so much (such as having high incarceration rates in response to high crime...yet not address the the social factors contributing to crime).

The conservative views are simply a response to the lack of economic opportunity...if the L.E.O were the fire, then the conservative religious views would be fuel.

Notice the highest rates are in the bible belt.

That's the greatness of USA,it is the land of the Law...

Everyone is afraid of going to prison, otherwise we would become a rich Brazil or India...

Should be noted that USA is the only country where rich people actually go to jail...even for 22 months ( Milken ) or 6 months ( Stewart).

Gimme a break, US couldn't prosecute rich people and leaders because they are the law.

Taiwan's ex-president was sentenced to life for embezzlement.

Ex-president Chen Shui-bian sentenced to life in jail

Taiwan's former president Chen Shui-bian has been sentenced to life imprisonment, plus a $6 million fine, after a court in Taipei found him guilty of corruption. The verdict ends a high-profile case that lasted nearly three years.

REUTERS - Former Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian, known for fiery anti-China rhetoric while in office, was found guilty of corruption on Friday and sentenced to life in prison.
Taipei District Court convicted the two-term president on six charges related to bribery and corruption, closing a fractious, high-profile case that opened nearly three years ago and involved Chen’s wife and numerous family members and aides.
He was also fined T$200 million ($6 million).
Several hundred supporters demonstrated near the court and some threw plastic bottles and trash at police in protest after the verdict and sentence were announced.
Prosecutors had charged Chen with embezzling T$104 million ($3.185 million) from a special presidential office fund, accepting bribes of about $9 million related to a land procurement deal and taking another $2.73 million in kickbacks to help a contractor win its bid for a government project.
Chen has said the charges were political, denied wrongdoing and will appeal against the verdict which is unlikely to affect China’s relations with President Ma Ying-jeou of the China-friendly Nationalist Party (KMT).
Chen’s wife, Wu Shu-chen, was convicted on seven counts of graft and also sentenced to life in jail, a court spokesman said in a televised address. She was fined T$700 million.
Chen’s son and daughter-in-law were handed down sentences ranging from 20-30 months for related crimes.
While ruling from 2000-2008, Chen upset Beijing by advocating formal independence from China, which has claimed sovereignty over the self-ruled island since the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.

War criminals like Bush and Cheney will never be held to court, ever.

Bernie Madoff gets 25 years and Wall Street crooks hardly ever gets prosecuted. All the while Chinese executes regulators who don't do their job or fraudsters who waste people's life savings.

Anyone who quotes that statistic is talking about income tax. Most people are talking about income tax when they don't specify what kind of tax they are talking about. I think you resorted to picking nits which would be ok if your post wasn't devoid of any other substance. Other than nit pick all you did was demean the poster without presenting any arguments. I thought you were better than that. Here is your post.

"Irrationality seem to be the hallmark of the wingnut mind. And blind obedience to authority is the hallmark of the conservative mind. You have both in spades.

Besides, everyone who earns and spends money pays taxes. That's way, way more than 45%. You're facts are clearly just as wrong as your mental processes."
