Just forget it, hon. He's a high school kid and one of those "internet warriors". That's all it is. It matters just about as much as a fly buzzing around your ear. Annoying as a species...but not of the least consequence as an individual, in the whole scheme of things!

I asked if you date latino men & you get all upset! Maybe we could meet up when I'm in the South. But you don't have to cook me a meal if you don't want to, diamond girl.

You asked if I HATED Latinos. Big difference.

I've tried following this thread for some time, since I come from a long ways from the original states involved in the Civil War. I entered basic at Fort Benning and my first introduction to racism (in my life, having grown up in Washington state) was the taxi driver and his buddy up front making a crack about the hair grease on the window left by a black passenger.

Unfortunately, the original poster's intent has been submerged in the volley of personal attacks.

My impression of the south was that they were still fighting the war a hundred and forty years later.

This thread has done nothing to distill that impression. I am really glad I live way west of the Mississippi. Racism is present in every culture and place, but nothing I have experienced is as institutionalized like the South.

Fortunately, the North had a butcher like Grant to counter a butcher like Lee, as well as Sherman, who really finished the war. In my younger days I liked to think he was too soft to be a hero because he didn't sow salt or use soil sterilant, but older age has mellowed me out. However, complaining about Sherman's tactics is like the Japanese complaining that we nuked them. The North certainly helped bring about this conflict but it was the South (and their majority slave-owning legislatures) that fired the first shot. Sherman made them sorry they had secceded--in the same way we used to make other countries sorry they'd attacked us.

Although I would never deface a monument now, I can understand the motivations for doing so.

Very informative post, teach1234! Are you a teacher in real life?

I dont know if thats the case, but after posting here on CD for a few months, (not to mention lurking a few 'other' forums on the 'front' of the subject), I am immediately suspect. I wouldnt have been if before exposing myself to daily white supremacist ideals, but now I dont know.

(I believe someone randomly asking about this very scenario in the 'black gangs' thread...how convenient...)
How interesting. I'm very curious to see how you would react if a monument to Martin Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks was defaced with "White Power". Why do I get the feelings that you would never even think to accuse blacks of doing it?

God, liberal America is pathetic.

The men memorialized in that monument died fighting for the real America.

I have more respect for blacks with a somewhat understandable militant opposition to the Confederacy than I do for pathetic white liberals who trip over themselves to see who can be the most PC by cheering on a group of monument defacers because they are too ignorant to learn the history of their own country.

Political correctness is such a joke.

Anyone who defaces a monument to dead soldiers is a piece of garbage and I would probably advocate the death penalty for them out of spite. I'm a strong anti-Communist. Various regimes in the Soviet Union were responsible for forced deportation, execution, and even genocide. Yet I wouldn't deface a monument to the average Soviet soldier. It's about respect. There are no memorials to German soldiers from the WWII era in the U.S. as that would be silly, but Ronald Reagan visited a memorial to the German dead during his time in the White House. I guess he just hated America and was actually a National Socialist left over from ODESSA.
