A. Why is making a profit something to be scorned?
B. The government provides a secure, reliable marketplace for all those gasoline transactions to take place. It also provides political and military support when dealing with oil reserves in other nations, helping to provide us with a steady stream of gasoline. Since it generally provides the framework for our economy to function domestically and abroad, I wouldn't say that it "does nothing".
The government probably doesn't "deserve" any more revenue, but as far as I'm concerned revenue isn't the point of this tax.
