My ex spent seven years in grad school getting her masters and phd, running up a six-figure student loan bill in the process but expecting a big-bucks job in the end. Unfortunately, by the time she graduated the bottom fell out of her field (biotech) and the jobs were/are few and far between. She'll be paying that off for a long time.
Also, her doctoral thesis was an invention which she eventually patented. Her professor/advisor, after having given almost no support and pooh-poohing her idea throughout her time in his lab, asked to be listed as a co-inventor. She refused and he effectively quashed her thesis for several years, with other members of her committee in apparent collusion borne by the fact that one of them, in an unguarded moment, said "It's a crime what they are doing to you." She eventually prevailed and got her degree after threatening a lawsuit, and thanks to a new female dean of the school.
I relate this to convey that even if you do everything right, you can still end up screwed. But for me, college was indeed fun and profitable and I managed to get my BA with no student loan debt. So, it's all relative.
