He was born in New Haven, CT (While his dad was at Yale) and didn't move to Texas until High School, attending public school for only one year.

He now wears the hat, boots, and 'twang with pride. He has publicly claimed to be a "true Texan" since at least his congressional campaign when he was 30, and many elite prep-school classmates have said he claimed to be "Texan" throughout high school.

If he is now a Texan, does that mean that immigrants who come here at 16 get to be full fledged "Americans after a few years, and not simply "Mexican-American", etc? And I am talking about legal immigration, plz don't hijack this into that debate!

Is it what you believe in your heart? Does that mean someone who has never been to Texas but "Believes" can be a Texan too?

I'm sorry, but you've been misinformed. He did not come to Texas at the age of 16.

George W. Bush moved to Midland, Texas at the age of 2 (1948) and didn't leave Texas until 1961 to attend Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. As we all know, he came back to Texas and I can only assume it is because he called it "his home."

To answer your basic question evlevo, being a Texan is a state of mind and is open to anyone who chooses to live in the state regardless of how long they have been here. Mexican-Americans(legal) in Texas can identify as Texans if they choose to, but normally they will self-identify as Mexicans instead. Also once somebody has lived in Texas, they can claim to be a Texan from then on, even if they leave the state.

If someone who has never been to Africa can call themselves African, or someone who has never left North America can call themselves Irish, then Yes, GWB has every right to call himself Texan.

I've only been in Tennessee for 6 months and I consider myself Tennesseean, and considered myself Texan for 6 years while I was there.

Just like his father's legal residence was a Houston hotel room, GWB's legal residence is downtown Chicago. for tax purposes. I can't comment on where his mind is but his residence certainly isn't Texas.

Since he has been residing in the White House for a few years now, can he claim to be a Washinton DC'n?

It’s not so important what state he (Bush) thinks of he is from; but those who live in the state that don’t think of him as one of them ~ that’s important! I don’t know if those in Texas think of George as being one of them? I don’t know if any state wants to think of George being one of them?

Now that he owns more property in Brazil then in Texas ~ maybe he’ll return there and become a Brazilian? One can only hope.

I worded it badly... I meant that he did not mix with 'real people' until high-school, and then it was only for a year.
