How do "former" US officials know this? If they're former it's not like they were there or had any insight as to what was going on. I'm not doubting whether this is true or not but I question the legitimacy of their claim.
We need to train the Afghans to be able to run their own country and then get out. We should treat everyone as a possible target and then we would not leave ourselves open for attacks from our six (back). We are there now and can not change the past but we damn sure better get a handle on the present and hopefully in the near future leave them be.
