Not sure if this has been covered (I've been away for a few days) but did you know that Obama qualifies for admission to the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution?

Ancestry of Barack Obama

Quote:
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) publishes a Patriot Index, a list of persons whose honorable service in the cause of independence during the American Revolution renders their female descendants eligible for membership in the NSDAR. Several ancestors of Barack Obama appear in the Patriot Index, including:

Phillip Ament (number 426)
David Bowles (number 904)
James Browning (number 442)
John Miles Duvall (number 444)
Samuel Goodnight (number 194)
James Hickman (number 886)
Elijah Holloway (number 408)
Thomas Martin (number 454)
John Overall (number 440)
Moses Teague (number 974)
David Toot (number 932)
George Toot (number 466)
James Wellborn (number 486)
John Conrad Wolfley (number 464)

While Mr. Obama is not eligible for membership in the NSDAR (by not being female), he is eligible for membership in the equivalent organization for men, the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Isn't that hilarious? He has deeper and stronger "patriot" bona fides than almost every prominent Birther attacking him. This includes (but is not limited to) Taitz, Donofrio, Apuzzo... heck, it would be fun to put together a whole list.

Let no irony go unsmelted.

That would have been a neat trick.

At the time Obama was born, his mother had never even left the country. She applied for her first passport for the trip to Indonesia after marrying her second husband.

How exactly would she have given up her citizenship?

A figment of some teabagger's fevered imagination?

Actually... no he wasn't. There are, in fact, no laws regarding American citizenship that "cover our military men and women" differently from any other foreign born child of American citizens. There was a special law passed for Americans (both military and civilian) born in the Canal Zone, and even though it was not passed until the year after McCain was born, it was retroactive to 1904.

But no special laws for the military exist.

BTW... of the four categories of unconstitutional ex post facto laws, this would not be one of them.

Sure. It was first enumerated in the case, CALDER v. BULL, 3 U.S. 386 (1798).

Justice Samuel Chase wrote the decision:

Quote:
1st. Every law that makes an action , done before the passing of the law, and which was innocent when done, criminal; and punishes such action. 2nd. Every law that aggravates a crime, or makes it greater than it was, when committed. 3rd. Every law that changes the punishment, and inflicts a greater punishment, than the law annexed to the crime, when committed. 4th. Every law that alters the legal rules of evidence, and receives less, or different, testimony, than the law required at the time of the commission of the offence, in order to convict the offender.
