The average hospital stay was 5-6 days actually. More if the woman used a catheder for pain medicine of it the pain level was too high.
Honey, there were no catheters for pain medicine back then. It was shots and pills. I would say the average stay varied by hospital, 3-5 days in general. I know this b/c I worked OB in Delaware, PA, IL, and Cali in the early 70s. Stays in Cali were shorter, especially than those in PA where 5 days was the norm, 2-3 in Cali.
