Seems to me the guy got a bum deal.
Yeah, I know the jury followed the letter of the law, but was that the "spirit" of the law? Not in my opinion.
The guy was upfront about it and wasn't hiding anything - and it seems he'd become a law-abiding citizen. Also, what of his wife? Should she have had to give up her rights?

I'm not certain that it is even a violation of the letter of the law, the case seems to hinge on how the courts will view his possession. It could be interesting upon appeal.

Also in question is whether or not his wife's right to own the guns was violated.
I believe the outcome is unfortunate, because he was reporting a crime when he himself got busted. But the three determinations that the jury had to make were pretty cut and dried.
