Who cares, I don't live in France and don't have any plans to ever live in France. I love Paris, but I don't intend to live there. Does not affect me, non story.

Hate crime legislation (which we do have) was pushed on us by people with the same mindset.

Verbal threats are still threats. Threatening is, even in our law, an assault. That is a crime.

I am not particularly bothered if all you boy-man can no longer threaten your girl friends or wives. I understand how difficult it must be to not be able to verbally, let alone physically, abuse females. Is that not what they are for? There has, in your limited world, to be a class of people you can abuse to make your selves feel like “real men”.

My stepfather, in addition to being a drunk, was such a man. After a huge amount of crap and a tour in ‘Nam, I confronted the clown with every intention of extracting a well deserved revenge and realized just what a pitiful little man he actually was. I wished him a long and miserable life and walked off. He lost everything he held dear before he died without any help from me. Good riddance.

I told that story so you little bullies would not get the idea that I was afraid of damaging people if necessary. I respect the French for removing the free pass, generally extended to bullies, to beat their wives, girl friends and kids. We need to do this in our society as well.

Well I would like to know what is the acceptable decibel level before it is considered "yelling". What if you are a person that talks loud by nature. I am being sarcastic of course, leave it to France to top the "idiot" list.

I'm French and I think it is ridiculous. I suspect my Husband and I would already be going down to Jail if this law really came into action ... How it will be enforced is beyond me.

Laws are already in place for abuse ( whether psychological or physical) and are sufficient as long as they are enforced correctly.

Having arguments however is not only part of being a couple, I think it is healthy.

There is a big difference between a marital dispute and marital abuse. I fear this moronic law would simply ensure trivialisation of the really serious cases.

It is basically a case of PC gone mad. Good intentions paving the road to hell. I say this as a flaming leftie liberal Pinko communist socialist ( as I have been called on this forum before).

Abuse is a serious crime and cannot be trivialised in such a fashion. The vast majority of couples have shouting arguments, most of us simply apologise like grown ups are supposed to and make up. Those of us who can't simply get a divorce.

When a marital dispute becomes abusive and the balance of power shifts or is uniquely poised on one side then the current laws are perfectly sufficient to deal with the issues as long as victim and the Justice system are willing to do so.

If a policeman witnesses a man beating up a woman ( wife or not) he can arrest the man under a plethora of French laws at the moment.

However despite all this please my American friends, do not start coming out with this " leftie evil Europeans and their PC"... crap because France has had a right wing Government for 15 years now.... Sarkozy is many, many things but leftie, socialist, communist, pinko, etc.. are not some of those things.

I know it's hard for some politically challenged people on this forum to understand this but the "evil socialist communist pinko" regime of the left is long, long gone in France.... France has never been so right wing in decades.

Most of Europe in fact is led by right wing governments. Strange that the right in America still hates us all.

So stop getting your knickers in a twist, the pendulum has swung in your favour... And how well we are doing as well following all the finest principles of pure capitalism. A real success.

Thank you. I am French , meet the village idiot.... Pray do tell why France tops the idiot list ? Your vast knowledge and wisdom could help me to improve my mind, strength of character and generally develop in an intellectual acceptable manner to fit in with the US.

I could really do with some lessons in cogitation and sentient philosophical ruminations of the highest order. One should always aim to improve oneself after all...

Please do not use too many big words though, my little French mind is not up to that much as you can imagine . Being an idiot is so awfully hard, all that empty space between the ears, not being able to tie my shoes laces and of course the utter inability to think in a logical and sensible fashion. Such a rare activity for people of my Nationality.

So spare a thought for this unfortunate and be gentle. One should not mock the afflicted, it is surely terribly bad manners. Keep it simple and I might just be able to flow of your learned lecture on the country of my birth.

What's next, typing an e-mail to your spouse all in caps or very vigorous sign language to your spouse can send you to prison? In NY alone, you could go to jail just for talking with your hands. "Don't you point your finger at me, Pierre! You'll do time."

How about this scenario. Wife says "Take out the garbage." Husband turns up the soccer game on TV. Wife yells "TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE!" Husband has her arrested. Wife countercharges with entrapment.

Hey, how the heck can you drive with your spouse in France. "Your Honor, she kept yelling. 'Make a right! Make a right! Slow down! Red light! Red light!' I felt sooooo hurt and you know, ashamed.

The law will not apply to Muslims, only to white Christians. IMO, much of France is doomed and it's too late to prevent it from getting worse.

People know when they are being bullied and not just having a yelling fight.

This kind of nonsense isn't a uniquely French thing. Its happening everywhere. Here in the USA, it has got to the point where you avoid any kind of personal conversation in the workplace in case it gets taken the wrong way.

We had one example where an intern was taken out to lunch. Conversationally, and in front of a group of people, one man asked the female intern ... "tell us a little more about yourself" (we wanted to see if she would be a good fit in the team). The intern later complained that the individual was "coming on to her".

The world is going mad and the French aren't any madder than the rest of us.
