I agree. It seems that Sarkozy is using "womens dignity" as a cover for some other ulterior motive. Recall that France suffered from major riots several years ago that were pretty much the work of Islamic nomads, poor people, and minorities.
Something tells me Sarkozy is retaliating for that damage. Something like "You're welcome to move to France, Mr. and Mrs. Islam, but you WILL abide by our laws."
I like it.
Yes I would applaud the honesty and certainly can see banning them at least in public for security issues as very valid

This has nothing to do with security. This is the exact same type of legislation that people on this board absolutely freak out about, but I guess restricting people's liberties is fine as long as it's against those dirty Muslims.

You obviously don't understand religious tolerance 1.01. If you defend Christianity, then you are a patriot. If you defend all regious freedoms, especially Islam, then you are a terrorist sympathizer. Expecting people to respect your religion does not mean you are ever required to respect others. It is a one-way street.
People should be able to wear whatever they want. If this wasn't something targeting Muslims, people would be throwing a fit on how this restricts our freedoms.
Not at all times, they shouldn't.
I haven't made up my mind on this issue, but I think it should be off limits to wear anythnig that conceals your face in certain situations, such as banks, airports, etc.
No charade on my part there pal.....I've no idea what muslim women think as I did not grow up in that culture and would not even remotely presume to know if their dignity is compromised..now if you forced me to wear a veil or burka that's another story
Wasn't implying you were propagating the charade, was merely referencing the idea of 'compromising dignity" and it's link to the Islamic burka. Sorry for the mix up

I disagree on this, but it's a moot point, since again, security is not the reason Sarkozy is citing. And now people are belittling Islam in this thread. Pretty much says everything.

Glad France showed some backbone on this one. Those who think that France should allow women to wear a face-covering veil....go talk to Saudi Arabia. Women can't even drive- is THAT ok???
