I find that I can often empathize with both sides, so I wince a little bit when I see someone ranting about "left-wing nuts" or "right-wing nuts". It seems that simply agreeing with certain principles makes one a "nut" in the eyes of his opponents.

What defines someone who is on the left? Or the right?

Well not getting into the partisanship definitions but nut definitions...

anyone so doggedly in denial when faced with irrefutable proof clinging desperately to a deeply flawed or perverse expression of an ideology. This definition applies wholesale to assorted mixed nuts like religious nuts, left for outer space nuts, right but not wrapped too tight nuts... please feel free to add more to that list.

I still have one of each; one on the left, one on the right. Does that make me a centrist?

Someone who espoused this particular definition would be one I would consider in the nut category. The term irrefutable proof should not be applied to one's religious beliefs. They can't prove to me that God exists (or maybe they just haven't) and I don't think that anyone could EVER prove that he doesn't. I don't know what can be considered irrefutable proof, I can refute anything. I don't have to prove it, just have to deny it. That is one of the definitions of refute. In fact that makes me think the word irrefutable should be stricken from our language.

I personally feel that anyone who can't form their own opinion without first consulting the party he belongs to might fit the category. Hannity, you read this forum?

I can't answer that. I'm a Libertarian - we are right and left, but we are always RIGHT and most people think we're NUTS

I'm a conservative, you're not; you're a left wing nut.

I'm a liberal, you're not; you're a right wing nut.

Pretty much sums it up.

Pretty much sums it up.
Unfortunately, it does, for some.

I'll add to the nut definition to say those who leap to wild conclusions before discovery is even attempted.

I'm religious and have never hidden that fact in this forum. I am not attacking religion. I can say irrefutably that GOD does not instruct me to bomb clinics or drag homosexuals by chains over a gravel road. I'm very certain my maker does NOT want me, or anyone, to do that to any human being. EVER.

Extreme partisanship. The absolute refusal to admit that 'your' side could be wrong. The absolute refusal to admit that 'those guys' just might have a point. The complete and utter inability to look at politics without checking what 'your party' thinks, first.
