CNN is reporting that the Hope for Haiti telethon raised a record setting amount of 58 million dollars in 2 hours and they are still counting. Also, the latest death count is up to 150,000.
Well then, in case anyone wondered...there isn't any hope for Haiti. $58 million isn't even a drop in the bucket, considering everything that needs to be done there.

I haven't read all 25 pages but what bothers me about this is that all the celebrities and public figures are donating partly for self-interest. I wonder if any of them, especially politicians, would donate money anonymously out of the good of their heart.
This is also a reminder of why I love natural disasters so much. If you're not prepared for them, TOUGH. Nothing you can do about it except try to survive and wait for other people to help you. California is long overdue for a colossal earthquake as well. It's only a matter of when at this point, lol

Does it really matter why anyone donates as long as they do? Lots of middle class people and small businesses only donate to charity for the tax right-offs i.e. if they truly wanted to do it anonymously they wouldn't even take a right off.
The latest figure is now up to 61 million raised from the telethon and the music from the event is now the number one download at iTunes in 18 countries.
I think it does matter; it's more of a philosophical issue. People donate because it's "good" or "right" or maybe, like you said, there's some other incentive. I certainly don't see any reason to become morally obligated and donate just because of a 7 on the richter.
Life is a game. And let's face it, it's game over for many of the victims. But did they lose their game? It depends. If their lives were fulfilling and they were happy with themselves before they died, I'd say it's a peaceful way to go.
As for the rest of Haiti...I say we should just cut our losses and pull out. I've heard crazy figures of how much time and money it will take to rebuild. Haiti's not going anywhere. It was dirt poor then and it's going to be even poorer now. What's the point?

Actually there is more hope if people in charge would put on a thinking cap....we can solve alot of our own issues and their issues at the same time...by sending people to re-build in Haiti...We can hire their own citizens and add to that our own citizens that need work and send them down to help or train the Haitians that will be employed to rebuild things...its more than just buildings that need fixing...telecommunications, medical, water systems, ect....it can all help in rebuilding and give some unemployed people over here jobs too...maybe the government should fund something like that instead of wasting on wars....i would go work in Haiti...i am unemployed
I haven't read every single post on this thread. Too depressing. I really do try so hard to think better of my fellow citizens. But reading those I have sampled I find myself thinking over and over again of the parable of the Good Samaritan. Seems that mankind hasn't advanced much but I am grateful that at least there are still some good "Samaritans" to be found. I guess the rest of you will just have to keep passing by on the other side of the road.

Great ideas Rob!! I was thinking the same thing the other day. It would be a win-win situation.
I found a religious organization I'm going to donate to. They've been criticized for being too preachy in their mission but they are verified to actually use donated funds( 87%) on relief supplies, world wide. Actually their being called too preachy probably sealed the deal. I've given to secular charities so now its time to spread it out more evenly.
A little religion won't hurt anybody and if sitting through a half hour prayer service is the price to pay for getting help, what does it hurt?
Samaritan'sPurse is the organization. They teamed up with Chick Fil A for Christmas care packages and Chick Fil A is well known for its positive business practices.
the Scientologist arrived in Haiti to give the healing powers of.............Touch. how sad the Haitians are gonna look at them and say something in Creole that would be hilarious. sorry id put some thing but the language is kinda hard to write unless you know how to spell out the words or went to school in Haiti. can only speak it.
