Earlier in the thread, it was disclosed that this person, and his wife, "smoke a lot". A lot, to most smokers, means more than a pack a day, but let's use that number, shall we? One pack per day, per smoker. So that's 60 packs of cigarettes per month. What's a pack of cigarettes cost? $5? I'll use that, someone can correct me if wrong. That's $300 per month on cigarettes. $3,600 per year. Homeowners insurance can be had for less than half that. And if you are renting, but don't own the house, renters insurance can be bought for far less.
Yes, this guy not having homeowners insurance is just a bad decision on his part.
I don't think the OP ever stated that these people didn't have renters' ins. because they couldn't afford it due to smoking cigarettes. However, given the description of the house, it's possible they wouldn't have been able to get renters' ins. on it b/c of the wood stove, it was a shack, etc. Several people have alluded to getting turned down for such reasons.
