The F22 got scrapped (not really scrapped, just didn't order anymore) because of the F35.
The F35 has most of the capabilities of the F22, but it also has vertical take off capability to.
Realistically, we are done making big jets like that anymore. The next wave of advanced military aircraft will be unmanned or UAV's.
Think of it this way. You can build an aircraft for half the price, thats less than half the size, that can fly 24/7 with refueling, at supersonic speeds.
Why wouldn't we scrap the old jet formats?
