As much as I feel for the needs of the people of Haiti I still think it's overrated.
Millions upon millions of dollars going to a country that was poor to begin with.
Other than the fact that there were people trapped and in need of medical treatment you couldn't tell the areas that were hit and ones that weren't.
I just think this country (USA) jumps over homeless people here in USA to save some in another country. I understand trying to save the lives of many who were hit by the earthquake and get medical attention to these ones but Obama is talking spending millions to rebuild their country.
The rich handing out millions out of their pockets to help Haiti when there are plenty of homeless people they pass every day that are ignored.
I feel for the country Haiti but they were in bad shape to begin with.
They had shelter before
They had prisoners in prisons before - not out raping women and stealing from families
They had basic municipal services before (power, clean water, sewer, etc.)
They had a central government before
They had clean clothes before
There was 150,000 more people before the 12th of Jan.
Many had jobs before

I think he is blind in not realizing that most of the
donations are not coming from the rich but from the average
Joe like you and me. The majority of rich folks are rich
because of their greed, the ones that did donate millions are
the exception not the rule.
I had enough about Haiti but here are the facts... Haiti needs boatloads of more money (we are speaking in the billions) to get back to "where they were before"... what that means is that the money won't make their lives better, it will just bring them back to the shantytowns they had before.. we have donated in the hundreds of millions, more than most of the other countries COMBINED but that's okay cause Americans are GENEROUS people... and here are the hard facts, even though we contributed hundreds of millions it is not clearly enough to get Haiti back to where it was before and guess what, Haiti will not get any more money... that's life, they will have to make do with what was given... so barraging the airwaves with Haiti this and Haiti that isn't going to get them more money... the givers (which have been incredibly generous) are tapped out... Haiti is going to remain Haiti, the only people that can help Haiti at this point is..... Haiti

Money cannot solve all things. The most powerful tools they have to build their lives reside inside them for free. Whatever help we mean to effectively deliver only has cost benefit for them if it enables their innate ability to rebuild a life. Looking at the welfare example of public housing project cabrini greens in chicago taught me a great deal. Others think more money should have been put into it, but I strongly disagree. Every group of people throughout the span of recorded history on this planet found a way up through one method-- unified faith in their community, and defense of that standard.
Here's the new plan for cabrini greens, and hopefully people will remain vested in it's preservation. Another experiment, yes, but if it succeeds might provide the blueprint for places like Haiti. Until we get it right in America, we have nothing to offer the world or it's troubles. Tearing Down Cabrini-Green - 60 Minutes - CBS News
