A surprising number of people on this board would have preferred for the U.S. not to help and for Haiti to perish.

Really? Did they post as much? Not that I am surprised, as this forum has quite a few of that rightist persuasion. My ONE republican friend said no way in H would he be helping them.

And a surprising number of liberals here have said the people and country of Haiti is in poverty and corruption because of America. You couldn't tell that from the statements in your own article in which they praise America.

Hmmm, here since July of 08 and a review of his posts (I took the liberty of reviewing the past 30 or so) would seem to indicate he is NOT.

Then you didn't look very hard. Go back and look at the threads started with their titles. Again, troll alert

And I do believe this is true. If I am not mistaken, the US did occupy Haiti after it was discovered they had sugar cane and a lot of it. In fact, at one point in history Haiti was a prosperous nation. I'll get back to you on this.

Don't have to worry about Haiti. I'm sure Obama will issue Greencards for them in order to live and work here. Don't think there's any other solution.

Hmmm, I came across this. If true, then the OP could be actually telling the truth here.

Recent Republican administrations have been particularly hostile to the popular will of the impoverished Haitian masses. When leftist priest Jean-Bertrand Aristide was twice elected by overwhelming margins, he was ousted both times – first during the presidency of George H.W. Bush and again under President George W. Bush.
