The Dems are not in control.

The GOP and a small handful of bad Democrats are able to block good middle class legislation by making the threshold to pass legislation effectively 60% not 50%

You can see the effect in the House where they do not have this rule.

The House passed a pro middle class Health care bill with means for reducing costs, AND the burden being put on the ultra wealthy.

In the Senate, the GOP and bad Dems joined forces to defeat those measures.

Poll Shows Few Americans Understand Senate Filibuster Rules - Robert Schlesinger (usnews.com)

If middle class Americans don't break this deadlock and elect more good Democrats, then this corporate influenced GOP/Blue Dog coalition is going to take us back to the Bush years.
The Democrats aren't calling the bluff. Let them filibuster. They'll have to stand there, talking, non stop, they can't even take a bathroom break.

Lets see them do it. If the 51 Democrats in the Senate believe the bills that might be blocked are worth it, let them sit there and listen to Republicans talk about whatever it is they want.

I think sooner or later, the scene of Republicans talking about their daughters last birthday party, to block legislation, might not look so good for them.

You think the Democrats aren't influenced by the corporations? Really?

Ok, what about ending the war in Iraq? Afghanistan?
What about shutting down Guantanamo bay?
How about allowing gay marriage? Repealing don't ask don't tell?

There is very little difference between the Republicans and Democrats...sorry you are too far gone to ever realize this.

This has got to be the most pathetic "blame republican" thread I've read yet.

Get a clue: IT'S NOT OUR FAULT YOUR OWN PARTY ISN'T BUYING THE OBAMAPELOSIREID BS!

Go cry to those big bad dems that won't just do as they're told. Tsk tsk, shame on them for not being sheep.

So, when the Republicans are in control...they get the blame and when Democrats are in control the Republicans get the blame....

How is that explanation working out for you with the independants (like me) that voted for Obama and dems and are horrified to see that nothing has really changed from teh Bush administration? Oh yeah, we gave Ted's seat to a Republican.

Take some personal responsibility.

Good Dems are not in control despite the fact that most vote with the middle class's interest at heart. .

Not with the 60% rule and not with their handful bad Apples that join forces with the GOP.

The goal is not to elect Demorats per se. The goal is to elect good Legislators who vote for middle class interests. The GOP platform doesnt stand a chance in that enviroment so they use dishonest rhetoric and try and divide Americans along cultural divides.

Filibusters don't work that way, anymore. Nobody standing around reading Constitutional lawbooks, anymore, refusing to yield the floor. That's been gone for awhile.

I do think the Dems are influnced by corporate money very much.

Not to the extent the GOP is. It's a question of degree.

We only have two choices.

You must pick the least worst Party and work to vote out bad apples.

I'm all for that but the Dem Leadership doesn't have the spine to confront GOP obstruction.

Considering how radical the GOP is today, I'm for doing away with the filibuster rule completely. Even if the GOP comes to power one day.

This simple rule is too complex for ignorant Americans to understand.

All they see is Dems not getting it done and look no further.

Thats true, but I say bring it back. Thats the actual law of how a filibuster works. That the opposing side can stand up, and talk about the weather, their daughters favorite present, law books, whatever they want.

As long as they are talking, no vote can be taken. I say, let them talk. They can only do it for so long.

Like I said, you let Republicans stand up there and be SEEN denying poor healthcare, or some of the other things they've voted against.

It'll be on the nightly news every night, bad press for them.

No, today both parties are so intertwined, that they don't want one party to have to stand up and talk for hours, or days.

Filibusters skyrocket under Republican minority in 110th Congress.

Republicans have become experts at using Senate filibusters — or often just the threat of filibusters — to block the Democratic agenda while in the minority. As this chart from Norm Ornstein shows, the use of filibusters have skyrocketed under Republicans:

Think Progress » Filibusters skyrocket under Republican minority in 110th Congress.

They do gum up the works for purely political and self-serving reasons. They do not give a damn about their consituency and it is so obvious. Yep, they gum it up like the sludge that that are. That goes for the Blue Dogs too.
