My son's school has an assignment which is basically a book report on a culture other than that of the student. Being who he is, my son wants to do the assignment on Russian Culture.
He was suggested to choose another culture because he is white and that choosing Russians does not satisfy the spirit of the assignment.
Uh, excuse me but we don't have a drop of Russian blood in our family tree.
This stuff is way over the top.
They were assigned to write about simply a different social culture?
How did the teacher explain "the spirit of the assignment" to the class?
Did your son misunderstand?
Are you saying that this teacher believes that culture is defined by skin color?

I agree. I am white and know far more about the black and latino cultures but zero about European cultures. Since I'm adopted, I don't even know about my ancestry which I believe is Irish.

Sounds like the teacher doesn't know the difference between cultural diversity and racial diversity.
Wow, just wow. Not only Russia is a melting pot, but it has one of the most beautiful and richest culture in the arts, music, literature, sciences, sports, and vodka.

That is rediculous.
Culture is not defined by skin color. If that was the point of the assignment the teacher should have talked about racial diversity.
I've contemplated suggesting he choose to do the assignment on lesbians.
Wonder if that would qualify.
