Every time there's a natural disaster like the earthquake in Haiti we hear about how generous the American people are.

Then I see a discussion like this, and the hateful, mean-spirited attitude so many here are expressing about their fellow humans, and it makes me wonder about how generous Americans really are.

Then why not write to your state Attorney General or State Representatives.
They look into things.

There is one welfare queen that even Oprah had once called out.

I don't consider it mean -spirited for taxpayers to expect their tax dollars that go to welfare recipiants actually go to those that are eligible.

Even charities should be held accountable for disbursements of their $$$

It is not mean spirited to shed a light on the abusers of the system. I know of several rather wealthy people, one here in AZ and one family in CA that could easily take care of their kid on welfare but would rather tax the tax payers for all the free crap they can get. We really should take care of our own dontcha think?

A rural, poverty stricken county in Minnesota ( Morrison) decided to hire a full time fraud investigator despite claims that people defrauding welfare was a very small percent of the people recieving it.

Soon after he was hired, the court pages started publishing names under the heading of-------" Wrongfully obtaining assistance".

Along with their names was the $$$$$$ amount of the wrongfully obtained assistance and the $$$$$$$ amount of their fine.

The County Commissioners stated it was money well spent as the amount saved paid his full time wages and benefits many times over.
Another benefit was the unknown number who got scared off from committing welfare fraud.

In most cases, on paper, those people appeared eligible so it wasn't the case worker's fault for not denying them.

The investigator had as his sole job digging deeper and tracking them closer.

Yup, it was simply amazing what he was able to uncover. And yet, not a single person who actually qualified for welfare assistance and followed the rules is getting turned away.

Accountability !

Good grief - I found the following quote particularly dismaying:

"Welfare recipients and their friends and relatives defrauded taxpayers of $500 million a year through the county's child care programs, a grand jury report concluded. The report found that nearly half the $1.1 billion CalWORKS child care program is lost to fraud. "

Not at all surprising. Gov orgs primary mission is to justify their own existence. Job quality is not all that important. Add to this that if they actually went after the many abusers then they would also have to admit that someone might not have been doing what they were paid to do. Their jobs for example.
This is one of the reasons I distrust the Gov to manage anything that is important to me. The gov is top heavy in bureaucracy, and very light in follow through.
What amazes me is that so many people don't feel that those who receive free dollars from the gov should be scrutinized.
My daughter is Autistic so I have spent quite a few years dealing with county and state agencies. I sit in meetings as they blather on about their game plans for my child and 99% of what they say is smoke and mirrors that will deliver 0 results. Looks good on paper though.
Welfare agencies don't want to cut people from the rolls prematurely. To do so might indicate that they need less employees. Less employees and recipients means less money, small quarterly budgets. We can't have that can we?

Raise your hand if you someone who did not report income on their tax return, or who paid or received cash for services. This is no different than a welfare cheater.
