I really don't think this is an issue.

#1. Because there are many other scholarships which could be applied for without those restrictions.

#2. There are scholarships available exclusively to females also which aren't available to males.

#3. Foundations are free to discriminate and award a scholarship to whatever group they choose.

This is not news, nor a controversy.

By the way, on the website, it clearly states that the administrator of the scholarship is the UNCF (located top right corner of the webpage) - if you know what that stands for, then you'll know the reason why the scholarship is not open to "whites".

Default It's his money, it's his choice

I'm sorry, isn't this Bill Gates' money?
He can do with it whatever he wants with whomever he chooses.

Isn't envy one of the capital sins?
What about that "Thou shalt not covet" stuff?

Who cares? Whats the big deal? There are some that say other races may not apply. I have seen it. It is HIS money. WHAT are you against? I thought the government should not have the right to tell you how to spend your money.

Right wing idiocy.

Sure as Gates has the right to discriminate with his money, we have the right to comment on it.

And if Gate's racism offends you enough, exercise the same right and avoid purchasing Microsoft products whenever possible.

Well said. Would you care to guess what the reaction would have been if this scholarship had only been available for whites? As it is, I bet this will receive minimal media attention.

Time to look into OpenOffice more seriously.

Say if a White of south African heritage applied. Would he/she be accepted or denied?

You should look into how much money Gates has given away before stating such a thing... he does not only give it to non-whites. The man is giving away his entire fortune. He has one specific scholarship available to minorities, a scholarship administered by the United Negro Fund. He donated 1.5 billion dollars to them to give away for scholarships.

Go ahead and take a look at what he has done besides that scholarship. It's a drop in the bucket.

Um, er, I seem to recall people like you having no issue forcing business owners to serve people they don't want do, even though it's their property, their money, etc...

The government should not tell you how to spend your money? So if a bar owner in NY wants to add a smoking section in his bar, separately ventilated, the government can and DOES say no, you cannot do that with your own money in your own bar, because we have outlawed smoking indoors.
