The Boston Globe ran an editorial on the amount anticipated to run the war in Iraq and asked how folks would spend the money instead.

Here's the article:

'Boston Globe' Asks Readers How Iraq War Money Would be Spent Elsewhere (http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003589268 - broken link)

How would you spend 456 billion on a good day?

I like these two on the article:
  • Remember The Soldiers: "Just the new spending bill of $120 billion could give over $42 million to each of the 3,000 dead soldiers' families," wrote one reader.
  • Another reader linked to an essay by blogger Dave Jarvis, "who argued that the money spent in Iraq could buy enough solar panels to generate 5.6% of the annual U.S. electric bill."

I'll have to come up with my own when I return from a meeting.

Hey there - slight correction that was 456 Billion!!!!!

We could use that to
- Build up our defenses against terrorism on US soil.
- Bring jobs back to the US
- Build homes for the needy
- Work on our health care system
- Help the elderly
just a thought . . . . :-)

If we took that money and gave every person in the US, about 300 million people, each person would have $1,520,000 each. No one would be poor, everyone could afford heath care, everyone could invest, the economy would explode, jobs would return, homes would be built, etc. Think of the possibilities

I’d say that we could best use the money by giving it back to China where we borrowed it to begin with. When the time comes to pay off the debt and we can’t – what do we pay it off with? Sell off the National Parks to China or the National Forested Lands to cover the money owed?

Why would we bother paying ANY of it back when they will just let us continue to roll over the loan and make payments forever. Like a national credit card.

Or we could simply stiff them and refuse to pay. Otherwise, Yeah, sell the parks, Power Authorites, make cars for the chinese for free. Write your own disaster.

I would not spend the money on the war. I would spend here at home (America) where we need it the most.
